Mile of Cars Hits Sales Record

Members of the National City Mile of Cars auto park collectively have nearly 600 million reasons to smile this week.

John Ball, the president of the Ball Auto Group and the Mile’s Business Improvement District, announced Feb. 23 that combined, members of the auto park made close to $600 million in taxable sales in 2005. That’s a 5.87 percent increase over 2004 fiscal year sales and the highest sales figure in the history of the auto park.

“Fiscal year 2005 not only marks the highest sales recorded in the history of the Mile of Cars, but continues a nine-year trend of increased sales beginning in 1997,” Ball said, noting that new car sales alone increased by 9 percent.

“The Mile of Cars sales increased during what was a difficult year for the auto industry overall,” said Ball, who declined to release actual sales figures for proprietary reasons.

According to published reports, the nation’s two largest automakers , General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. , both saw declining U.S. sales in 2005 and that’s led to plant closures and wide-ranging cost cutting.

The National City Mile of Cars is the region’s largest auto park, with 22 franchised car dealerships along National City Boulevard.
