Manpower Temporary Services of San Diego is promising to hire about 1,000 people during a 24-hour “job-a-thon” from 3 p.m. to 3 p.m. July 11 to 12. The unique event is being held at Qualcomm Stadium.
“Our internal slogan is we won’t sleep until these jobs are filled,” said Phil Blair, Manpower’s president and co-owner.
Blair said the majority of the jobs the agency is planning on filling will be in the technical, manufacturing, and clerical/administrative sectors.
Among the employers represented at the event will be Kyocera Wireless, Callaway Golf, Novatel, Nokia, Erickson, Mitchell International, Prescription Solutions, Republic Tool, Advanta Mortgage, Unisys and Raytheon.
Manpower executives designed the event as a creative way to find prospective employees in a local labor market averaging less than 3 percent unemployment for most of the year.
“This seemed to be an innovative and exciting way to recruit for a wide variety of jobs and attract individuals with diverse skill levels and expertise,” said Mel Katz, Manpower’s co-owner. “This is an opportunity for all individuals in San Diego to obtain either temporary or permanent positions that fit their skills, provide challenges, and boost this thriving economy.”
Blair said the event is only the first of several large recruitments he hopes will result in the hiring of about 3,000 people by this fall.
As an inducement to attract workers, and perhaps to keep the interviewers going through the marathon session, the event will include refreshments, and live country music on Tuesday night.
