Make Way, Mammoth: Construction Site Yields Whale

Construction crews have unearthed the remains of a second prehistoric creature at the future site of the Thomas Jefferson School of Law in downtown’s East Village, law school officials said Feb. 26.

A skeleton believed to be that of a baleen whale was found just beneath the spot where crews discovered the bones of an Ice Age Columbian Mammoth more than three weeks ago.

San Diego Natural History Museum Paleoservices Department Director Tom Demere called it an “unprecedented find.” It is the only marine mammal dating from the Pleistocene era ever found in San Diego County, he said.

The whale may have measured 40 feet long based on its rib size.
