Low-Wage Job Growth Called Bad News

The Center on Policy Initiatives, a local research and policy advocacy group funded by private foundations, said Jan. 18 that the latest state unemployment report proves that the San Diego economy is creating more lower-wage retail jobs.

The report issued Jan. 18 by the state’s Employment Development Department showed the unemployment for San Diego County in December to be 4.9 percent, up a tenth of a percent from November.

The area showed a net gain of 3,400 jobs during the month, with retail trade accounting for 2,400 jobs. The next largest sector creating jobs was government, at 1,000 additional jobs, mainly at local school districts.

According to CPI analyst Murtaza Baxamusa, this shows “retail is replacing the hospitality industry in driving employment growth in the region.”

Baxsamusa added, “We continue to add low-wage jobs while middle- and higher-wage jobs are lost.”
