Local Unemployment Figures Remain Steady

s 2.7 percent, the same level as April’s revised rate, but well below the 4.6 percent total for California, and the nation’s 3.9 percent for the same time.

The area’s nonfarm employment increased 8,800 jobs over the prior month, bringing the total nonfarm employment for the region to 1,183,700, which is 0.7 percent more than April and 2.7 percent more than May 1999.

The largest increase in the monthly employment came in the government sector where 4,700 additional jobs were recorded, primarily from hiring by the federal agency in charge of the Census 2000 counting.

Retail trade and services added 1,500 and 1,400 jobs, respectively, as companies geared up for the summer tourism season.

The next largest additions came from construction, which added 800 jobs.
