ConferenceMolly Maloy of San Diego has been selected to attend the National Young Leader’s Conference in Washington, D.C., from Nov. 14 to 19.
The high school senior will join 350 outstanding students from around the country attending the conference, themed “The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today.”
The six-day conference will include many activities to help student leaders build on their skills. Role-playing activities include “If I Were President,” which lets students act as the president and Cabinet members responding to an international crisis, and “Testing the Constitution,” which allows them to examine actual Supreme Court cases.
At the end of the week, students will form a model Congress, in which students assume roles of U.S. representatives and debate, amend and vote on proposed legislation.
“The National Young Leader’s Conference provides an opportunity for students like Maloy to distinguish themselves as tomorrow’s leaders,” said Michael Lasday, executive director of the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, the organization that sponsors the National Young Leader’s Conference.
“Scholars not only gain knowledge and experience in the nation’s capitol, they leave with a sense of accomplishment and an increased ability to face the challenges of the future.”
Maloy, a student at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace in San Diego, was selected for her proven scholarship, leadership and volunteerism. She has served in local hospitals, school organizations and has been honored with various awards. Maloy would like to go into genetic engineering as a career.
She was nominated by several people including teachers and her school principal.
More than 425 members of the U.S. Congress participate on the Congressional Youth Leadership Council board of advisers. Congressional Youth Leadership Council runs and sponsors the National Young Leader’s Conference events. The nonprofit, nonpartisan educational organization was founded in 1985.
