Letters–A DoJ vendetta against Microsoft? And support for the ballpark remains unwavering.

DoJ Vendetta?

Editor:

Isn’t it rich? The Department of Justice is out to destroy Microsoft’s “monopoly” but hasn’t said a word against the new mega-mergers planned by AOL and Time Warner and Time Warner and EMI.

Of course, the DoJ would never personalize the issue, would they? The federal government ought to leave Bill Gates alone and spend its time , and taxpayer money , more wisely.

Ballpark Support Unwavering

Some people think that the support for the ballpark project is wavering, but they are not listening to the same people I am.

Two weeks ago I attended a press conference put on by a group of business and community leaders that support the project. The group that spoke was diverse. Each speaker believed that the ballpark project was truly more than just a ballpark, it was our future!

Each speaker had an exciting vision for San Diego. Father Joe Carroll of the St. Vincent de Paul center spoke of the permanent jobs created adjacent to his property. Julie Meier-Wright of the Economic Development Corp. spoke of the sunrise industries being attracted to the downtowns across America. Labor representative Jerry Butkiewicz and Abdur-Rahim Hameed of the Black Contractors Association spoke of the opportunity of getting their fair share of the construction jobs. Reint Reinders of ConVis spoke of the potential for increased tourism. Jessie Knight of the Greater San Diego Chamber of Commerce spoke of the importance of learning from other cities, like San Francisco and Seattle. Phil Klauber spoke of the history of public-private partnerships including San Diego’s Exposition held in Balboa Park which celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal. Former CCDC board member John Davies spoke of the billions of dollars that will be invested by private developers adjacent to the project. Finally, two Little Leaguers spoke of the importance of dreams , theirs , to someday play in that new ballpark.

I learned something about San Diego that day , this good news did not make the news because it wasn’t “news.” San Diego supports the ballpark and has already voted on it! The only news is by the obstructionists that are trying to stop it.
