Lead San Diego to Honor Visionary Award Winners March 25

Lead San Diego announced the winners of the 2008 Visionary Awards, which will be presented at a ceremony to be held on March 25 at the San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina. This year’s recipients are: Morgan Award, Tom Fat, in memoriam; Quality of Life, Nice Guys; Community Collaboration, Leon Williams, former chairman, Metropolitan Transit System; Lead Graduate of the Year, Cheryl Kendrick; Diversity, Ellen Beck, UC San Diego Medical Center; Inaugural Ronald Kendrick Regional Stewardship Award, Chris Van Gorder, president and CEO, Scripps Health; Nathanson Award for Cross-Border Region Building, Jeffrey Davidow, president, Institute of the Americas; Economic Opportunity, Hybritech. The honorees are recognized for their contribution to the region and their demonstration of leadership.

The 2007 Business Achievement Award in the information technology category was presented to Carlsbad-based 3E Co. by the Environmental Business Journal. The 3E Co. is a provider of environmental health and safety compliance services. The magazine presented the award at the publication’s Environmental Industry Summit on Feb. 20. This is the second year in a row that 3E Co. will be recognized.

Jay Dee Cutting was named to the Wall of Fame Class of Developers by the School of Hospitality Business Alumni Association at Michigan State University. Cutting, franchise sales director for Choice Hotels International, was recognized as a top developer who has built and managed numerous hospitality businesses.

SGIS has been selected as one of the top businesses in the nation by DiversityBusiness.com. Among the awards received, the company ranked No. 7 on the Top 100 Small Businesses in California list and No. 23 on the Top 100 Diversity-Owned Businesses in California list. The lists are produced annually by DiversityBusiness.com and represent the nation’s top multicultural earners.

Ken Baumgartner, chief operating officer, Corky McMillin Cos., received the Celebration of Life Award from the American Cancer Society at its Community Salute event at the Mission Bay Hilton. San Diego Naval Medical Center was named Healthcare Partner of the Year.

VIP Mentors held its 33rd annual Awards Luncheon on Jan. 25 at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse. Second Chance/Strive was featured as a new alliance with VIP Mentors. VIP mentor Steve Wingfield, a family law attorney, received an award along with his parolee mentee, who is an honor student at Grossmont College. Steve was recognized for his work as a mentor to eight parolees since 1999.

Jewish Family Services will hold its Heart & Soul Gala 2008 on March 1 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla. Mitzvah Awards will be presented to Marsha Berkson, Hand Up Youth Food Pantry; Merle Fischlowitz, North County Inland Senior Center; and Carole and Jerry Turk, Turk Family Center. They will receive the award for their extraordinary accomplishments with these programs sponsored by Jewish Family Services.

Soroptimist International of La Mesa honored Center for Community Solutions’ employees for its dedication to domestic violence. Honorees were presented awards at the annual Soroptimist Club breakfast. CCS employees honored were: Connie Martin, Danielle Lingle, Juli Finch, Linda Gonzalez, Margaret Slaska, Maria Tellez, Ramona Garretson, Shay Franklin, Socorro Gonzalez-Heather and Teresa Grame.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad received an award on behalf of the National Organization on Disability’s (NOD) National Organization Partnership Program. They were recognized for furthering the goals of the Americans with Disabilities Act and promoting the full participation of people with disabilities in all aspects of life. The club has been active in responding to the needs of the people with disabilities through its PALS program, which is an inclusionary program.
