If you have a knack for interviewing, fact-finding, report writing and computer skills, there could be a spot for you on the San Diego County grand jury.
Individuals with a flair for research and a desire to ensure good government in San Diego County are needed for the 2001-02 grand jury to review citizen complaints and carry out the grand jury’s traditional investigative role.
“We are looking for public-spirited individuals of all ages, ethnic origin, and socio-economic groups to perform the grand jury’s essential watchdog function,” said Stephen Thunberg, executive officer of the grand jury.
The yearlong appointed members essentially conduct civil investigations, Thunberg said. But there could be times when the circumstances are different.
“The court also impanels, from time to time, short-term grand juries from the regular trial juror pool to consider criminal indictments sought by the district attorney,” he said.
Applications for the grand jury can be obtained from the court Web site (www.san diego.courts.ca.gov/superior/public/grandjury.html), by phone at (619) 685-6667, or in person from Superior Court business offices in the Hall of Justice in Downtown and in the East, North, and South County regional centers.
Individuals with interest in serving on the grand jury must have lived in the county at least since June 1, and must be able to serve four or five days a week from July 1, 2001, to June 30, 2002. Applicants also must be U.S. citizens and at least 18 years old.
Elected officials, current trial jurors, and those who have served on a California grand jury within a year of the selection date are not eligible.
The 19 grand jurors and 11 alternates will be chosen at a random drawing scheduled for June 1 in the presiding department of the Downtown courthouse. Payment is $25 per day, plus mileage and free parking at the Hall of Justice.
