Japanese Restaurant To Open in Gaslamp District Landmark

A new Japanese-themed restaurant is being built in the Gaslamp Quarter, with plans to open in the early part of next year.

The restaurant is called Momo Sushi & Seafood, and its estimated cost is $2 million.

Construction has already begun on the 15,000-square-foot property, located at 555 Market Street at the corner of Sixth Avenue.

The space, previously used by G.I. Joe Army & Navy Surplus, is listed as a historical landmark. It was built in 1908 to house the Alan John Clothing Factory.

Momo will occupy the site’s ground floor, where the dining area will be, and the basement.

The menu is being created to feature sushi, Japanese dishes and teppan grill cooking.

The latter involves diners selecting ingredients from a selection of vegetables, meat, poultry, noodles and spices, and having the chef grill the meal as they watch.

Momo’s d & #233;cor will have warm colors, textured wall treatments and mosiac tiles on the floor, according to a media release.

The restaurant is being developed by Frank Baik, whose family owned a chain of Korean grocery stores and later an Asian produce farm in Northern California.

If the venture succeeds, Baik wants to open additional locations in Southern California.
