James Irvine Foundation Gives $450,000 Grant to San Diego Foundation

The San Diego Foundation received a $450,000 grant from the James Irvine Foundation to support regional arts efforts as part of their Communities Advancing the Arts initiative. The grant is the second of two from Irvine, and the funds will be used to support local efforts to raise the visibility of and increase donor involvement in the arts.

The Brees Dream Foundation presented a $10,000 check to Rady Children’s Hospital on April 7 during a visit by professional football quarterback Drew Brees. In addition to Rady Children’s Hospital, Brees, formerly of the San Diego Chargers and now with the New Orleans Saints, has made donations to organizations such as the Painted Turtle Camps, Emilio Nares Foundation and American Cancer Society.

The Zoological Society of San Diego received a $250,000 challenge grant for the 25th Anniversary of Rendezvous in the Zoo, Silver Safari. All donations to the June 21 event will be matched dollar for dollar up to $250,000.

Scripps Clinic and Scripps Green Hospital held their annual Renaissance Ball on March 29 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla Hotel. The event raised $180,000 for the clinic and hospital. Among major sponsors was the Audrey Geisel/Dr. Seuss Foundation.

The Good Guys of Morgan Run held a luncheon and auction at the Morgan Run Club & Resort on April 5 for wounded Marines and sailors. Major sponsors included the law firm of Haynes & Boone LLP, Aldila Inc. and Barona Valley Ranch & Casino. The Good Guys Marine Fund raised $322,000 this year with a goal of reaching $500,000, which will go to injured troops for outings, meals and gasoline gift cards to defray transportation expenses.

The Valenti Foundation’s Tribute to 45 Years of Valentino Fashion was held on April 12. The legendary singer Chubby Checker kicked off the fund-raising effort by presenting Father Joe Carroll with a $100,000 check. The event raised money for Children’s Village in San Diego’s East County, which will serve as a new home for more than 200 parentless children. Children’s Village is a project of Father Joe’s Villages.

Weidner’s Gardens and The Paul Ecke Ranch partnered for the annual charity garden tour and plant sale held on April 12. The event was for the benefit of the Community Resource Center, the primary provider of comprehensive social services in the North Coastal regions. All proceeds go to programs for abused women and children, low-income families, and the homeless. The Paul Ecke family donated all plants for the sale.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego received a $20,000 contribution from Cricket Communications in honor of its 3-millionth customer. The money will be used to grant wishes to children suffering with terminal illness.

Sharp Metropolitan Medical Campus presented the 35th Anniversary of San Diego Crew Classic. Union Bank of California was the sponsor of the Crew Classic Brunch by the Bay. The event was held on April 6 at Crown Point Shores, Mission Bay.

The American Lung Association held a benefit for clean air, Evening in the Sky, on April 5 at the Omni Hotel. The event was sponsored by S. C. Wright Construction Co. Inc. Other sponsors included the law firm of CaseyGerry, Kyocera America, Inc., Astec Inc, Qualcomm Inc., the Jan Cortez Family and Kindred Hospital. The $80,000 raised will support ALA programs supporting clean air and to prevent lung disease and promote lung health.
