Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development, L.L.C. announced on Aug. 26 that its drug discovery facility in La Jolla has received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The company was recognized for its design and environmental systems, which include a combined heat and power cogeneration system that significantly reduced carbon dioxide greenhouse gas emissions. According to the company, the total reductions are equal to removing 285 cars from California roadways each year, while annual natural gas savings from these systems are estimated to equal the amount required to heat 765 single-family homes in San Diego.
The building also conserves about 11 million gallons of water a year through its various design features, according to Johnson & Johnson.
The U.S. Green Building Council supports environmentally friendly building design and operations.
