Hueso Wins Race for 8th District; Faulconer Leads in 2nd

San Diego businessman Ben Hueso, 36, won more than 71 percent of the vote in the Jan. 10 special election to complete the term of Ralph Inzunza in the City Council’s 8th District.

Hueso defeated Luis Acle, 62, the president of the San Diego Unified School District’s board of education.

Kevin Faulconer, 38, a public relations executive, holds a slim lead over San Diego lawyer Lorena Gonzalez, 34, in the 2nd District race to replace Michael Zucchet.

Faulconer took 50.99 percent of the vote, with 2,500 absentee and provisional ballots still to be counted. The registrar of voters has 28 days to verify the results.

Both Inzunza and Zucchet resigned from office following their July 18 convictions on corruption charges. Zucchet was later acquitted of seven of nine charges, and was granted a new trial on the remaining two charges. But the U.S. attorney’s office still might seek an appeal of the acquittals.

While the new council members are to be sworn in Jan. 23, they will still have to compete in a regular City Council election scheduled for June 6.
