HEALTHCARE—Hospitals Trapped By Rate Hikes

Gary Stephany’s warning of perilous effects on San Diego’s health and safety triggered by high electricity costs went unheeded by the California Public Utilities Commission.

“I testified at the CPUC, but heard nothing that helps hospitals,” said Stephany upon his return from the Aug. 22 CPUC hearing in San Francisco.

The president and CEO of the Healthcare Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties said while the CPUC’s 3-2 vote capped the costs for the 70 percent of San Diego consumers and small firms who use the least electricity, it did nothing for hospitals, which seem to have few electricity-saving options.

Spokesmen for several local hospitals said they have already exhausted all options to curb energy
