By this time next year, several local groups hope to have a San Diego County Women’s Hall of Fame up and running.
The organizations banding together to sponsor the project are the Women’s History Reclamation Project, the San Diego County Commission on the Status of Women, the SDSU department of Women’s Studies and the UCSD Women’s Center.
According to the group, the purpose is “acknowledging and honoring women who have made a difference in the county of San Diego throughout the centuries.”
The deadline for making nominations is Jan. 18, 2002.
The organizations want to induct five women each year, and one of the five will be a posthumous nominee.
There are five categories for nominations. The first is “trailblazers,” meaning women who somehow cut a path in society for other women. The second is women who have significantly improved the lives of other women in San Diego County.
The third category is an activist, leader or professional who has made women’s lives better by creating change or shifted a way of thinking or doing.
The fourth category is for women who have had an impact on the county’s multicultural issues, and the fifth would be for someone who has kept her culture and history alive within her community.
The women’s hall of fame founding groups have planned an inaugural induction ceremony for March 28 of next year.
The induction will also be a fund-raising event for the four founding organizations.
The hall of fame is expected to be housed at the Women’s History Reclamation project Downtown.
Several corporations have made donations to the project to design it and show of potential financial support.
The companies include Union Bank, KPBS and Washington Mutual. No details were available about their specific donations.
