Ground Breaking: Career Technology Center at San Diego City College

What: Five-story instructional facility will expand the Nursing, Cosmetology, and Photography and Digital Arts departments. It will also provide a new headquarters for the City College campus police. The project includes a new parking structure with 694 stalls. Multipurpose classrooms will include interactive instructional tools such as integral video projects and screens. A lecture room is planned to accommodate 125 students.

Where: 1313 Park Blvd., San Diego.

Interesting aspects: A number of sustainable features will enable it to be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-certified. Extensive use of recycled materials includes terrazzo flooring that contains 100 percent post-consumer glass. Surplus steel remnants not used on the exterior finishes are being incorporated in the interior design. The building enclosure and electrical systems are integrated to achieve significant daylighting. Solar panels on the roof and parking structure’s south fa & #231;ade will supply more than 7 percent of the building’s energy needs.

Financing: Proposition S, a construction bond program voters approved for improvements to campuses and educational facilities.

General contractors: Rudolph & Sletten, construction manager; Gafcon, program manager.
