Governor OKs More Slots for Sycuan

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed an amended compact between the state and the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation on July 10, changing the rules on how Sycuan may operate its casino.

The deal still needs federal approval.

The compact allows Sycuan to increase the number of its slot machines to 5,000, up from the current 2,000. It also calls on Sycuan to contribute a greater amount of its casino revenue to the state.

Sycuan, which operates a casino on its reservation east of El Cajon, retains an option to build a second casino, which was allowed in its original compact from 1999.

The state Assembly approved the compact June 28. The state Senate gave its approval April 19.

During ceremonies July 10, Schwarzenegger also signed new compacts with the Pechanga Band of Luise & #324;o Indians and with three other American Indian tribes that run casinos in California.
