San Diego’s Community and Economic Development Strategy for 2002-04 is now available online at the city’s Web site.
The strategy is a policy document that provides information on the direction of the city’s regional economy, industry research, strategic issues and recommendations for improving economic priorities.
The document is updated by the Community and Economic Development Department every five years.
“It’s a prediction of what will happen over the next couple of years a reasoned projection,” said Mike Jenkins, assistant to the director for the city’s Community and Economic Development Department.
The Community and Economic Development Department began reviewing the possibility of the strategy going online last fall and the City Council adopted the idea May 21.
With the strategy available online, the public will be able to have access to the city’s plans and policies, Jenkins said.
“It helps fulfill the Public Records Act , it is broadly available to anyone who wants it,” he said.
The Public Records Act states government documents must be made available to the public.
Research for the document is provided by more than 40 partner agencies and businesses, including the San Diego Association of Governments, the San Diego Workforce Partnership and Centre City Development Corp.
“They (agencies) focused on issues that are specific to both sides, which helps to have a more narrow focus,” Jenkins said.
The document will cover five issues: regional economic prosperity, increasing economic opportunity, implementing “smart growth,” energy independence and revenue enhancement.
Jenkins said these are long-term issues that affect the quality of life in the region and the strategy offers solutions and proposals to implement them.
“The revenue is not growing nearly as fast as the population,” he said.
The department worked with the San Diego Workforce Partnership to generate ideas and solutions on how to increase job development and programs.
“The goal is to continue to try and maintain general economic prosperity here in San Diego,” Jenkins said.
The document can be found on the city’s Web site at (www.sandiego.gov).
