Goodbye, Good Guys: Seven Stores Closing

The Good Guys, Inc. home entertainment chain announced Oct. 6 that it will close all 46 stores in California, including three San Diego locations that will be closed immediately.

A spokeswoman for Good Guys’ parent company, Dallas-based CompUSA Inc., said it is closing stores because CompUSA decided to offer home entertainment products in its own stores.

The following San Diego locations will close immediately: 8657 Villa La Jolla in La Jolla; 2502 El Camino Real in Carlsbad; and 11485 Carmel Mountain Road in Carmel Mountain Ranch.

Closing sales are planned for the following four stores: 875 E. H St. in Chula Vista; 1109 W. Valley Parkway in Escondido; 5500 Grossmont Center Drive in La Mesa; and 3495 Sports Arena Blvd. in San Diego.

These four stores will close in 60 days, said Katie Means, a CompUSA spokeswoman.

“Consumers wanted a broader product range in one location, so we are expanding the home electronics department in California and Hawaii and all CompUSA will be branded CompUSA but feature Good Guys inside,” Means said during a phone interview.

Means declined to say how many employees will be affected by the closures.

“Until the stores close, (employees) will be needed, and after that time there will be limited employment opportunities within CompUSA and severance will be offered when appropriate,” Means added.
