GM Manages Well on Lodging Industry Matters

The American Hotel & Lodging Association has recognized Kimberly Akers as a General Manager of the Year for outstanding achievement in the lodging industry. The award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated outstanding contributions of leadership and service to the community and civic affairs. Akers is the GM at West Inn & Suites in Carlsbad.

The Arthritis Foundation of San Diego has honored Michael and Liz Copley and their family at its Razzle Dazzle Gala. They were recognized for their dedication and commitment to finding a cure for arthritis.

Real estate attorney Ginger Larson, a founding partner of Winton & Larson LLP, was named the San Diego North Chamber’s Committee Member of the Year. Larson has chaired the SDNC’s annual State of the Community luncheon for the past two years and has served on the Economic Development Committee for several years.

Marie Flatley, a San Diego State University College of Business Administration professor, was recognized with the Outstanding Business Educator Award-University Level by the California Business Education Association. “The time and effort she gives to her students, research and to her participation in other organizations shows through in her work,” said Gail Naughton, dean of the College of Business Administration.

Jase Prewett, on-site purchasing manager for Brookfield Homes, was recognized with the Building Industry’s Greatest Award by the San Diego County Building Industry Association. “Jase consistently demonstrates superior management methods and excellent organizational and leadership skills,” said Steve Doyle, the president of Brookfield Homes.

A special Commendation Award was given to Scott Johnston, a San Diego police officer, by the office of Scott Peters, San Diego City Council president and District 1 councilman. The award recognized Johnston’s 28 years of diligent service for the San Diego Police Department. Johnston was the first police officer to earn a Purple Heart Medal for rescuing two officers down by gang members; Johnston was shot in the process.

The Variety Boys and Girls Club of Queens, N.Y., recognized Solana Beach resident Salah Hassanein’s involvement with the club for the past 50 years by renaming the club the Salah M. Hassanein Variety Boys & Girls Club of Queens.

The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce and the U.S. Small Business Administration honored Classics for Kids with the Emerging Business of the Year Micro Award.

Ivan Gayler, a San Diego developer, was recognized by the Lux Art Institute at its annual Lux After Dark. He serves on the board of the Lux Art Institute and is head of the building committee.

Jim Roth, of the RB Sunrise Rotary, has been recognized as Rotarian of the Year in Rotary International’s District 5340. Roth was honored for his extreme involvement in efforts to improve life for North County businesses and families. He is past president of RB Sunrise Rotary, past chairman of the RB Chamber of Commerce and chairman-elect of the San Diego North Chamber of Commerce.

Wheeler/Frost Associates Inc. has earned a spot on Bloomberg’s Wealth Manager’s Top Wealth Managers List as well as on Financial Advisor’s magazine inaugural list of the Top Registered Investment Advisor Firms.

The California Society of CPAs has honored Robert Kevane with its Public Service Award for 2006. The award recognizes individuals committed to public service through participation in charitable, governmental or volunteer work that significantly affects the community.

Barnhart Inc. was awarded the Resident Officer in Charge of Construction Safety Award by the U.S. Navy Facilities Engineering Command. The award recognized Barnhart’s safety record of zero accidents and zero loss on a large project. The project honored was the renovation of two 111,000-square-foot Bachelor Enlisted Quarters at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.
