Getty Foundation Awards $220,000 to Museum of Contemporary Art

The Getty Foundation, the philanthropic division of the J. Paul Getty Trust, has awarded $220,000 to the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego for Connecting to Place: Collecting Contemporary Art in Southern California. This is a three-year initiative focused on a series of major exhibitions drawn from the museum’s collection. MCASD’s collection comprises contemporary art in all media, with more than 4,000 paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, sculpture, video and installations, and serves as a significant cultural resource for Southern California and beyond.

La Jolla Music Summerfest Society SummerFest Gala was held Aug. 11 in Rancho Santa Fe. Gala sponsors were Equastone Real Estate Investment Advisors and the Procopio law firm. Other sponsors included Tapenade Restaurant, Potts By Patt, Don Patt, Maru Davila and Nina. The event raised $204,000 to support the programs of La Jolla Music.

The Grossmont Healthcare District granted Jewish Family Services $26,251 for its Caring Community , Living with Cancer program, which provides therapeutic services, including support groups and educational workshops on research and stress management.

Vista Hill Foundation received a $34,000 gift from the estate of Stefanie Strauss who died last November. “The No. 1 item on our wish list has been a teaching kitchen for the Stein Education Center in Chula Vista. With this gift we will be able to create Steffi’s Kitchen for children with autism and other developmental disabilities,” said Ann Mound, vice president of development.

The Acura Classic Benefit held at La Costa raised $256,000 for Scripps Polster Breast Care Center. This is the fifth year Acura and Promotion Sports Inc. have designated the care center as the beneficiary, raising more than $1 million. Acura and Promotion Sports Inc. underwrote the expenses.

The San Diego Foundation awarded a grant of $23,049 to the Museum of Contemporary Art for an initiative called Creative Technologies, in which new media and cutting-edge technologies will be used to broaden audiences and enhance visitors’ appreciation of exhibitions on view. The project was funded by The James Irvine Foundation; the Oliver R. Porter Memorial Fund; Colonel Frank C. Wood Memorial Fund; Charles B. Cram Fund; and the David Huot West and Antoinette Huot West Endowment Fund of the San Diego Foundation.

Las Patronas held its 61st Jewel Ball on Aug. 4 at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. Underwriters included Coast Surgery, Cooley Godward Kronish, Holland America and AT & T.; Major beneficiaries include Camp Fire USA San Diego and Imperial Counties Council, The Old Globe, Helen Woodward Animal Center, Family Health Centers, Rady Children’s Hospital and San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum.

Students at the Devereux Kanner Center have spent their summer raising money for the American Cancer Society. The 230 students with disabilities undertook day trips to local businesses asking for donations. They raised $3,000. Devereux is a nonprofit organization providing services around the nation for persons with emotional, developmental and educational disabilities.

The Center for Community Solutions received a $25,000 grant from Cox Kids Foundation to support programs that provide counseling to children who have been traumatized by exposure to domestic violence. They also received $1,000 from Mission Bay Women’s Club toward Project Safehouse shelter and $1,200 from Plum Crazy Saloon and Alaska Brewing Co. to support CCS’s Beach Pride Healthy Start Program.

The 14th Annual Moores UC San Diego Cancer Center Luau and Longboard Invitational was held Aug. 19 at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Genentech was the title sponsor. Proceeds will support research, clinical trials and patient care at the Rebecca and John Moores UCSD Cancer Center.
