From Shelter to Home Field: Chargers at Qualcomm on Sunday

The San Diego Chargers will play their scheduled Sunday home game against the Houston Texans at Qualcomm Stadium after all, the city announced Oct. 26.

“Early Friday morning, the Chargers informed me that the NFL has decided to play Sunday’s game as scheduled at Qualcomm Stadium,” said Mayor Jerry Sanders.

Up until Friday, Qualcomm Stadium had been used as an evacuation center for residents fleeing the wildfires that have ravaged the county this week. At one point, the number of residents at the stadium was reported to be about 10,000.

Because firefighters have made some headway in gaining control of the fires, officials have allowed most evacuees to resettle in their homes. Qualcomm Stadium was being shut down Friday, and Sanders said the facility would be ready to accommodate the game.

The team has been practicing in Arizona this week and was considering playing the game in Texas if Qualcomm was still being used as an evacuation center.

The game is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. Oct. 28.
