Hundreds attended the 15th annual Golden Hanger Fashion Awards gala last month at the Mission Valley Marriott recognizing San Diego individuals and companies for their contributions to the fashion industry.
The event was sponsored by Fashion Careers of California College in San Diego.
Tanya McAnear, director of student services of FCC College, said the show was also set up to allow design students to show their fashion collections and to allow the merchandising students to produce a fashion awards show.
“It’s a great way for students to get involved and give back to the community,” said McAnear. “It was a wonderful and entertaining fashion show.”
In addition, the show raised $10,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation from auctioned items and opportunity drawings.
The July 27 awards ceremony recognized Janet Sutter of Copley News Service with the 2001 Lifetime Achievement Award for being a founding member of the Fashion Group International of San Diego and the Costume Council.
Many San Diego companies and other individuals were also recognized for their achievements including Bradys as San Diego Retailer of the Year; Susan Lake for Zanlake Headwear as San Diego Accessory Designer of the Year; Apparel Suppliers of California, Inc. as San Diego Manufacturer of the Year; Brigitte Palmer for Brigitte Couture Swimwear as San Diego Fashion Designer of the Year; Hang Ten as San Diego Fashion Company of the Year; Let’s Go! as San Diego Progressive Retailer of the Year; Cherry Pickers as San Diego Vintage Boutique of the Year; and Diane Powers of Bazaar Del Mundo with the Special Fashion Award.
Pat O’Connor, president of FCC, said 800 ballots were mailed to previous winners and members of the San Diego fashion industry.
“Many people don’t realize that there’s a lot going on in the fashion industry in San Diego,” said O’Connor. “This is a way to recognize our industry.”
