Enano Stars in Season Finale of ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’

A revealing opportunity. San Diego’s own enano , the smallest PC boxes in the world, not to mention one of the world’s most energy-efficient , put in a guest appearance for the final segment of ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” on March 13. Three enanos were included in a new Hurricane-resistant home built by the show’s crew that goes to a deserving resident; a fourth powers the new music system in a rebuilt church that had been leveled by the powerful Katrina. Chief Operating Officer Bill Reh says it was an honor to have been included in the two makeover projects. “It’s phenomenal,” he says. “This project reinforces our mission to not only reduce carbon emissions of computers worldwide, but contribute to the environment we’re all a part of.”

On March 24, former professional golfers Billy Casper and Gene Littler are scheduled to tee off from the deck of the USS Midway to launch a fund-raising campaign for the San Diego County Junior Golf Association, which has helped nurture such great duffers as Phil Mickelson, Charley Hoffman, Scott Simpson and Craig Stadler. The big event arrives June 14 during the U.S. Open Championship when the mighty Midway presents comedian Jay Leno in a benefit performance Down by the bayou? When it comes to the strength of real estate in college towns, San Diego ranks near the bottom of the bottom 10 , No. 8 to be exact, according to the first ever scorecard put out by College Real Estate LLC. Thibodaux, La., home of Nicholls State University, earned the highest marks as a college town with a 13.7 percent jump in home prices last year. San Diego, home to two great universities, not to mention our terrific community colleges, had a 7.2 percent drop in prices. But, hey! The weather’s better here. And no gators! The Sycuan Tribal Council, which brought us the wonderful restoration of downtown’s US Grant Hotel, is breaking ground on a $30 million, 173-room Marina Gateway Plaza resort hotel in National City on March 18 Anthony Bollotta won Allied Person of the Year honors at a dinner at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina on Feb. 28. The fest was sponsored by the county’s hoteliers and hospitality sales and marketing folks. What makes this particularly apropos is that Bollotta, an instructor in the University of San Diego’s hospitality program, is a big brother of nearly five years with Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County and a member of the board of directors for Home Start, which helps to prevent child abuse … Mamma Mia!

Rafaela’s, the Pacific Beach Italian eatery popular with the budget-minded briefs and bikinis set, unexpectedly shuttered its doors recently. The telephone at the restaurant has been disconnected and few details were available at press time.
