Close to 80 Building Owners and Managers Association volunteers gathered last month at the Downtown YWCA to give the worn facility a face-lift.
The group worked for six hours to spruce up the 73-year-old historic building, said Elizabeth Smith, a YWCA board member.
Repairs made to the YWCA facility included lighting, plumbing, flooring and elevator safety improvements. The building also received fresh paint, new drapes, awnings and carpet. BOMA also modernized the YWCA’s reception lounge and restrooms. In all, an estimated $20,000 worth of improvements were made.
In addition to the repairs, BOMA members donated a variety of goods that were presented to the YWCA at the event, including clothing, furniture, toys and basic necessities, Smith said.
While repairs were under way all over the building, children were entertained by crafts projects and volunteer clowns who painted faces and made balloon animals for the kids, she added.
