Downtown YMCA’s Recent Renovation Generates National Recognition

The National YMCA recognized the Downtown San Diego YMCA with an award for excellence in its facilities, the result of a recent $500,000 renovation and 30 percent increase in membership. The downtown Y is one of 54 to receive the award out of 2,617 other Y’s nationwide.

This award is presented every two years.

“The renovation and addition of $135,000 of new elliptical cross trainers, treadmills, climbers and bikes complete with flat-screen TV monitors has had a huge impact on the Y’s downtown residents and corporate commuters,” said Dan Duncan, executive director of the Downtown YMCA.

Dr. William H. Rastetter was inducted into the Connect Entrepreneur Hall of Fame on May 11 at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines hotel. Rastetter is former president and chief executive officer of Idec Pharmaceuticals.

The Hall of Fame celebrates those who have paved the way for the technological innovations and businesses of today.

The San Diego Historical Society held its 2007 History Makers Gala on June 2 at the US Grant Hotel.

The George W. Marston Award for Civic Leadership was presented to Daniel J. Tucker, who is chairman of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation.

The Legacy Award for Philanthropic Leadership was presented to Terry Coop-

er, who is president of Las Patronas.

Rana Sampson, the first lady of San Diego, is scheduled to be honored at the San Diego Center for Children’s 119th annual dinner June 23 at the US Grant Hotel.

Sampson is a national problem-oriented policing consultant and former director of public safety for the University of San Diego.

She addresses such issues as schoolyard bullying and has a positive impact on school campuses throughout the country.

Senior Community Centers honored three local residents and organizations that have made a difference in the lives of low-income seniors at its 10th annual Heroes Luncheon on May 18.

Clelland & Co. received the Volunteer Hero Award; the San Diego Padres employees received the Community Hero Award; and Jimmy Lowe received the Senior Hero Award.

Shea Homes was honored by the Greater San Diego Reading Association for its numerous countywide programs aimed at promoting student reading at home and in the classroom.

“We salute Shea Homes for its many literacy outreach programs and for sharing our common goal of promoting student reading,” said Melanie Miller of the Greater San Diego Reading Association.

Eleven San Diego County residents were honored at the Burn Institute’s 34th annual Spirit of Courage Awards Banquet. The awards honor individuals who have risked their lives to save another from burn injury or death by fire.

This year’s recipients are: civilians Jeremy Boyd, Will Pritchett, Alan Schmidt, Manuel Elizarraras Jr. and Rick White; San Diego police Officers Daniel Meyer, Bart Lane, Daniel Hall, Michael Vargas and Joseph Waggaman; and California Highway Patrol Officer Vincent Brown.

The city of El Cajon has received excellence awards from the California Society of Municipal Finance Officers and the Government Finance Officers Association in budgeting and financial reporting.

Additionally, the city was the recipient of excellence awards for capital budgeting and development of the city’s five-year business plan.

El Cajon Finance Director Mike Shelton says, “We take great pride in the professional distinction this provides to the city and citizens of El Cajon.”

AMN Healthcare, a health care staffing company, has received Athena’s 2007 Pinnacle Award in the Corporate/Organization/Institute category. Athena, affiliated with UC San Diego, is an organization of executive women in science, technology and health care businesses.

The award recognizes those organizations that have furthered the development of skilled and talented women and which have made a substantial impact within the San Diego technology, life sciences and health care sectors.
