Donation Supports UCSD Professorship

Hearty kudos goes out to the Nicholas family for recently putting up most of the $500,000 endowment for a third chair in Greek history at UC San Diego’s History Department, the university said Feb. 1.

The Nicholas’ $335,000 donation will be used to finance the research activities of the modern Greek history chair, covering Greek history from 1768 to the present. UCSD also has two other Greek history chairs, one covering ancient Greek history and the other covering the Byzantine era.

John Marino, chairman of UCSD’s History Department, said the endowment led to the hiring of Thomas Gallant, a renowned scholar of Greek history, who will help attract the best Greek students in the nation to the program.

Gallant has a doctorate in classical archaeology from Cambridge University, and most recently held the Hellenic Heritage Foundation chair of modern Greek history at York University in Toronto.
