Six Torrey Pines High School students will benefit this year from the “Dollars for Scholars” program with scholarships from Pardee Homes.
Pardee has been a corporate sponsor of the program at Torrey Pines High in Del Mar for more than 15 years.
The program, founded nationally in 1958, is a network of community-based scholarship foundations throughout the United States that work to expand educational opportunities for local students by involving the community and private sector.
“Dollars for Scholars” started at Torrey Pines High in 1987 as part of the Citizens Scholarship Foundation of America. The program’s goal is to assist students by providing scholarship money and/or academic support.
This year’s program yielded more than $42,000 in scholarships awarded by several sponsors to 54 students.
Pardee Homes recently awarded $500 scholarships to Kristina Gordan (planning to attend Brigham Young University), Summer Marsh (UC Santa Cruz), Nicole Kang (Harvey Mudd College), Lindsay Littler (UCLA), Lakshmi Narasimhan (UCLA), and Catherine Sohn (UC Davis).
Scholarship recipients were chosen anonymously by an awards committee made up of local board members of the Citizen’s Scholarship Foundation of America and a counselor from the high school. Student applications are judged on the basis of school and community service, personal goals, work experience, academic achievement, recommendations and need.
