Doggie Day Care Stakes Out Franchise in El Cajon Neighborhood

Boulder, Colo.-based Camp Bow Wow opened the dog day care company’s first San Diego franchise in El Cajon on March 12, with plans to open four more.

Husband and wife franchisees Mark and Connie Garrett have always been animal lovers and pet owners. They signed their franchise agreement two years ago.

The Camp Bow Wow complex, located at 1677 N. Marshall Ave., can accommodate up to 110 dogs in its 6,600-square-foot indoor area and 1,800-square-foot outdoor play space. It is open 365 days a year for overnight and daytime boarding.

The Garretts paid a franchise fee of $50,000 in 2006 using money from their 401(k) retirement account. That fee is now between $60,000 and $80,000.

Garrett said that the company’s targeted market is single, female professionals, ages 24 to 59, with an average income of $75,000 and up.

“Research has shown that women are waiting until later to have children as they further their careers,” Garrett said. “A dog can provide companionship in the meantime.”

Owners said the El Cajon kennel boarded 35 dogs in the first week of business.

Camp Bow Wow has 70 camps in the United States. It plans to have 250 locations by 2010.

Weaver Makes Its Way To Gaslamp:

The Persian rug retailer who has been in business in La Jolla since 1994 opened on March 27 at 530 6th Ave.

Weaver’s Touch, run by the same people behind La Jolla Rugs, has about 4,500 rugs for sale at its 5,000-square-foot showroom.

Owner Reza Ghasemi signed a 23-year lease and has the option to purchase the building upon the lease’s termination because the space is historic, he said.

“Weaving rugs goes back thousands of years, and we thought if we could relate this to a historic area it’d be the Gaslamp District for us,” Ghasemi said.

Ghasemi said that he has not yet assessed the total cost of the move. However, he thinks that business will be strong in coming months based on its new location.
