DeMaio Tapped for White House Panel

Carl DeMaio, the president of the San Diego-based Performance Institute, a government-reform think tank, has been appointed to the Service Acquisition Reform Act Panel by the White House Office of Management and Budget.

The panel is a federal advisory commission that has been charged with recommending to the administration and Congress ways to improve federal acquisition and contracting policies.

The first meeting of the panel is set for Feb. 9 at the White House Conference Center.

“We must make government a ‘smarter shopper,’ ” said DeMaio. “The panel is a great vehicle for updating federal acquisition practices to enhance transparency and accountability for performance.”

DeMaio said that he was approached for the job about a year ago.

“I don’t like to do things in an official capacity,” he said. “Rarely do I do things like this. But with the problems with Halliburton and other companies, it’s important to improve the acquisition policies and be accountable to the taxpayers.”

Among his goals, said DeMaio, would be to improve the opportunities for women- and minority-owned businesses to do more business with the government.

“I hope the report we put out isn’t as suspicious as the Blue Ribbon report,” DeMaio added, making a wry reference to the controversies that are now dogging the 2002 final report of San Diego Mayor Dick Murphy’s Blue Ribbon Committee on city finances.
