Deadline Extended for Drug-Tracking Technology

For the second time, the state Board of Pharmacy granted drugmakers and suppliers a two-year extension to comply with a state law requiring electronic drug tracking systems, known as e-pedigrees.

Board members voted unanimously March 25 at a meeting held in San Diego at the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center. The extension gives drugmakers, wholesalers and pharmacies until Jan. 1, 2011, to install technologies to track prescription drugs along the supply chain.

Pharmaceutical companies lobbied for additional time, citing concerns about cost and concerns related to compliance from third-party manufacturers scattered around the world.

“Though it appears that many of the technical solutions have already been developed, and that there are an impressive number of very significant technology vendors involved in this endeavor, the pace of many of these innovations and applications would benefit greatly from additional time to mature,” wrote William Powers, president of the board, in a letter presented during the meeting.
