Cubic’s Zable Gains Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Honors

Walter Zable, chairman and chief executive officer of Cubic Corp., was named the 2006 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in the Distribution/Manufacturing/Security category.

Zable was recognized for founding and continuing to lead Cubic. Now in its 20th year, the award program recognizes the significant contributions of business leaders and founders who build and sustain growing, dynamic businesses.

Founded in 1951 in San Diego, Cubic has some 6,000 employees and does business in the defense and transportation industries.

George Damoose, tax partner of Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP, was presented the Joanne M. Garvey Award for Lifetime Achievement in Tax at the 2006 Annual Meeting of the California Tax Bar and the California Tax Policy Conference.

Damoose was honored for his lifetime achievement and outstanding contributions in the field of tax law.

The Bank of America Neighborhood Excellence Initiative honored Senior Community Centers with its Neighborhood Excellence Initiative Award.

The award recognizes organizations, local heroes and student leaders helping to rebuild and revitalize their community. By being honored with the award, Senior Community Centers will receive $200,000 throughout the next two years to help the organization achieve its goals.

The San Diego Architectural Foundation named its 2006 Orchid and Onion Award recipients.

The Grand Orchid went to project CAL IT2: UC San Diego; the Grand Onion went to the Salk Institute Master Plan: the Salk Institute; the People’s Choice Orchid went to Petco Park; and the People’s Choice Onion Award went to Brooklyn/Golden Hill Elementary.

Orchids are given to innovative architecture projects, while Onions go to projects that waste money and are not well designed, according to the foundation.

The SDAF is a nonprofit public membership organization that is dedicated to the development and appreciation of outstanding architecture and urban design throughout the San Diego region.

NurseWeek magazine recognized Tammy Doolittle, a registered nurse at Sharp Grossmont Hospital, with the Nursing Spectrum Excellence 2006 National Nurse of the Year Award.

Doolittle received the honor in the mentoring category for her efforts in providing positive professional influence, guidance and support of other nurses in any setting.

The San Diego Direct Marketing Association has recognized Chris d’Eon with the Margaret Sellers Award for 2006. D’Eon founded Deon Direct Inc., a direct marketing firm.

The award, named in honor of San Diego’s 1979-1992 postmaster, recognizes superior success and outstanding service to the San Diego direct marketing community.

Junior Achievement of San Diego and Imperial counties’ 18th annual San Diego Business Hall of Fame 2006 Laureates included Ernest Rady, founder of American Assets Inc.; Debra Reed; president and chief executive officer of San Diego Gas & Electric Co. and Southern California Gas Co.; and John Moores, chairman of the San Diego Padres.

These individuals were recognized for the significant impact they have made in the community.

David Lynch, founder of Responsibility, received the World of Children Humanitarian Award from World of Children.

The award recognizes those selfless individuals who make a difference in the lives of children across the globe.

Responsibility is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational programs, and gradually increasing the number of schools built and the addition of teachers.
