Cricket Expands Its Texas Footprint

Cricket Communications, the primary subsidiary of Leap Wireless International Inc., a San Diego flat-rate cell phone carrier, said May 5 that it is expanding its market. Beginning May 6, Cricket will offer services in the Texas cities of Beaumont, Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Laredo and McAllen.

The new markets cover about 2.4 million potential new customers.

Cricket is already offered in Texas in Houston, Byron/College Station, Temple/Killeen, Austin, San Antonio and El Paso. At the end of last year, Cricket had 2.9 million customers.

Cricket’s unlimited, pay-up-front cell phone service ranges from $35 to $60 per month, depending on features.

Leap operates in 23 states and holds licenses in 35 of the top 50 markets in the nation.

In late trading May 5 on Nasdaq, shares of Leap were at $54.81, up 5 cents from the prior day’s trading price. Its 52-week range is $29.87 to $99.04.
