County Names New Registrar of Voters

Deborah Seiler has been appointed as the San Diego County registrar of voters, and is expected to begin work here June 4.

County officials made the announcement May 11.

Seiler, 57, who serves as the assistant registrar of voters in Solano County, replaces Mikel Haas, who has been promoted to deputy chief administrative officer.

A graduate of UC Berkeley, Seiler has served as assistant to the California secretary of state for elections and political reform, assistant chief of elections for the California secretary of state, and as a commissioner on the California Fair Political Practices Commission, among other posts.

Seiler’s hiring “highlights our effort to put together a strong team to manage all three 2008 elections,” said Walt Ekard, chief of administration for San Diego County.

“At this point, throughout California, there is uncertainty as to the status of the state’s certified election systems,” he said. “We, and election officials from all over the state, are awaiting the review of the California secretary of state. That makes it very difficult to begin to prepare for what will be the busiest year ever for our county registrar of voters.”

Seiler’s annual salary is $150,000.
