County Celebrates Law Week

The local celebration of Law Week will include a variety of events from April 29 to May 5.

Although Congress named the first day of May as “Law Day USA” in 1961, the San Diego County Bar Association extended the one-day event into a weeklong community outreach program that helps educate and inform the public about the law and the justice system.

The events will be staged around the county as follows:

April 29

Free Law at Longs: Free legal advice provided at seven Longs Drugstore locations in the county from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

SDCBA volunteer attorneys will be present at the following locations:

– Mission Center at 5644 Mission Center Road in Mission Valley.

– Terra Nova Plaza at 380 H St., Chula Vista.

– Oceanside Plaza at 4130 Oceanside Blvd., Oceanside.

– Midway Towne Center at 3950 W. Point Loma Blvd. in Point Loma.

– 5685 Balboa Ave. in Clairemont Mesa.

– 3749 Avocado Blvd. in La Mesa.

– 191 Woodland Parkway in San Marcos.

May 1

– KNSD 7/39 Ask-A-Lawyer: NBC 7/39 viewers can call a special number that will be available during the broadcast for free legal advice from 4 to 7 p.m.

– Ask-A-Lawyer About Employment Law: Attorneys will be available for one-on-one consultations from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Chula Vista Civic Center at 276 4th Ave., Chula Vista. Lawyers will also be available from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Joyce Beers Uptown Community Center at Vermont Street and Vermont Way in Hillcrest, with parking available at the Ralphs Grocery store off University Avenue.

May 2

– Ask-A-Lawyer About Family Law: Free informational seminar on family law proceedings, custody, visitation, dissolution of marriage, and one-on-one consultations from 6 to 9 p.m. at the SDCBA Bar Center located at 1333 Seventh Ave., San Diego.

May 3

– Ask-A-Lawyer About Bankruptcy Law: Free informational seminar on bankruptcy proceedings and one-on-one consultations from 6 to 9 p.m. at the SDCBA Bar Center at 1333 Seventh Ave., San Diego.

May 4

– Ask-A-Lawyer About Employment Law: Attorneys will be available for one-on-one consultations from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Carlsbad Library at 1775 Dove Lane, Carlsbad.

May 5

– Youth Day in Court: Some 60 students from several local high schools will learn about the law and legal profession from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the San Diego Superior Court at 220 W. Broadway, San Diego.

– Law Day Luncheon: The SDCBA will hold its annual service awards luncheon to recognize legal professionals and media representatives.
