Contractor Sought For Carrier Project

The U.S. Navy is searching for a contractor to build a new $55 million aircraft carrier wharf at North Island Naval Air Station on Coronado.

The move comes after top Navy officials approved homeporting two more nuclear-powered carriers at North Island. The base is home to the USS John C. Stennis. The USS Nimitz will sail into town in 2002, followed by the USS Ronald Reagan in 2005.

Each carrier has a payroll of $120 million.

The Navy’s controversial nuclear homeporting project has met complaints by some Coronado residents and environmental groups, who have voiced safety and environmental concerns.
