McCarthy Building Co. began construction on the 110,000-square-foot Student Academic Services facility at UC San Diego on Gilman Drive in La Jolla. The facilities will include a concrete and structural steel hybrid frame with curtain wall exteriors. The project is scheduled for completion in March 2007.

Cost: $30 million.

Architect: Rob Wellington Quigley. Pnina Goldberg, a senior at UCSD, will provide project oversight.

Project manager: Ron Hall.

Good & Roberts, Inc. has completed the construction of 77 tilt-up panels on the new facility for Gen-Probe, Inc. on Sequence Drive in San Diego. The 292,000-square-foot building is scheduled for completion in May 2006 and will serve as headquarters and a manufacturing facility for Gen-Probe.

Architects: Peter Bussett and Ned Haskell of Smith Consulting Architects.

Subcontractors: ILA + Zammit Engineering Group, DEC Engineers.

Johnson & Jennings General Contracting completed tenant improvement construction for the build-out of a 19,439-square-foot corporate office for Educational Lending Group, Inc., a full-service education funding company, at 12680 High Bluff Drive in Carmel Valley. The work included construction of the firm’s new corporate offices and server room and the build-out of a fire suppression system for the server room, and new finishes, lighting and mechanical systems.

Cost: $940,000.

Architect: DesignCorp.

Project manager: Carl Haines.

On-site supervisor: Robert Mudd.

Subcontractors: Neal Electric, Comfort Systems, Howard Rug Co., McBride Door, Schmidt Fire, Wageman Painting, Cass Plumbing and Best Interiors.

Pacific Building Group is scheduled to begin construction on the Mission Viejo Medical office building on Crown Valley Parkway in Mission Viejo in May. The 140,000-square-foot, five-story, structural steel office building is slotted for completion in May 2006.

Architect: HDR, Inc.

Project manager: Jeff Bingham with John Hazard as project superintendent.

Subcontractors: Schuff Steel, Advance Fire Protection, Brian Cox Mechanical, Paschall Mechanical, Prime Electric, Tower Glass, Lakeview Concrete, Otis Elevator.

Ledcor San Diego Construction has started construction on Oceanside Terraces, a mixed-use development in the heart of the city’s central business district. Janez Development is the developer of the project, which calls for a six-story building with 38 luxury condominiums on the upper four levels, retail on the ground floor and office space on the second level. The residences will range in size from 1,600 to 2,600 square feet. The project is scheduled for completion in summer 2006.

Cost: $40 million.

Architect: Rothenberg Sawasy Architects, Inc.

PCL Construction Services, a general contractor based in Carlsbad, began work on Montevalle Community Park in Chula Vista. The 29-acre park will contain three multipurpose fields, a softball field, basketball and tennis courts, a skate area, an off-leash dog area, a walking trail and numerous picnic areas.

Cost: $13.9 million.

Architect: Hanna Gabriel Wells.

Landscape architect: Spurlock Poirier Architects.
