Competition for Greatest Gadget Heats Up

CommNexus San Diego, the nonprofit technology group, hosts its eighth annual GadgetFest Oct. 23 at Qualcomm headquarters.

Tech companies will showcase their most innovative technologies and compete for the coveted title of Greatest Gadget.

Last year’s winner was Motorola’s MC17 portable shopping system, which is a scanning device that allows shoppers to speed up the checkout process, locate items and do price checks. The 2006 winner, Grand Central , a service that ties telephone numbers and services to a single inbound number , was acquired by Google.

Other gadgets that debuted publicly before any trade shows at GadgetFest were Motorola’s Q phone, Sling Media’s Slingbox, and the Razr.

The best gadget competition is preceded by a trade show that offers an opportunity to see the latest technologies and to network with industry representatives.

Greatest Gadget participants are: Mushroom Networks, Nextivity, Nokia, Nine Multimedia, LG, Qualcomm, Real Phone Card Corp. and Research in Motion.

Trade show exhibitors are: Alioscopy USA, Cricket Communications, Ewing Design Group, Kyocera Wireless, Motorola, Mushroom Networks, Nokia, LG, Vangard Voice and Verizon Wireless.

The trade show and networking runs from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Greatest Gadget competition runs from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The event will be held at Qualcomm’s Irwin M. Jacobs Auditorium, Building N, 5775 Morehouse Drive, San Diego.

Judges are MP3.com founder Michael Robertson, technology columnist Phil Baker and television technology correspondent Steve Kovsky.
