Commission Bans Some Qualcomm Chips

The U.S. International Trade Commission June 7 banned the importation of wireless devices that contain some types of Qualcomm chips.

Sprint, Verizon and AT & T; phones use Qualcomm’s chips.

The commission previously determined that some imported Qualcomm chips and chipsets were in violation of federal law because they infringed a U.S. patent held by another large chipmaker, Broadcom.

The ban does not apply to orders placed on or before June 7.

Qualcomm stock, traded as QCOM on the Nasdaq, closed at $41.02 the day of the announcement, down nearly 3 percent, but was bouncing back in after-hours trading, up 3 percent.
