The city of San Diego is the largest city in the nation to move its paper-based purchasing process to an electronic online system, reducing processing time by 10 to 30 percent, city officials said.
The city recently implemented a new online purchasing system that allows city departments to request items for thousands of vendor-provided supplies and services.
Financial management director Ernie Anderson said it is too early to calculate the amount of savings from the new system, but he expects the process will involve some 10,000 paper requests, resulting in both savings in labor and paper.
