Carlyle’s Arrival to Have Minimal Impact on Booz Allen Office

The pending acquisition of the majority of Booz Allen Hamilton Inc.’s government contracting unit by the Carlyle Group, a private equity giant, won’t change much for its San Diego office, says the unit’s top local officer.

“It will probably have zero impact on us,” said Dave Karp, vice president at Booz Allen’s San Diego office.

Carlyle said this month that it was buying a majority stake in Booz Allen’s government unit for $2.54 billion. The McLean, Va., consulting company also has a commercial and international unit, which does not have a presence locally.

That entity was split off from the government business May 21 under a new name, Booz & Co., and is managed from London.

The Carlyle transaction is expected to close this year, subject to shareholder and regulatory approval.

In the past year, Booz Allen’s San Diego office has grown by about 10 percent to 750 employees, Karp says.

The office’s largest customers are the U.S. Navy, particularly the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, the high-tech development and acquisitions unit that’s based in San Diego.

Booz Allen’s revenue for the fiscal year ended March 31 was $4.8 billion, compared with $4 billion in the prior fiscal year. About $3.5 billion in revenue was derived from the government business, says George Farrar, spokesman for Booz Allen Hamilton.

Among the jobs created at the local office are program and acquisition management experts, financial analysts, economic and business cost estimators, system and network engineers, and information security engineers, says Karp.
