Business Journal Staffers Take Home 12 Awards

A half-dozen members of the San Diego Business Journal’s editorial staff were recently recognized for journalistic excellence with a dozen industry awards.

The San Diego chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists awarded two editors and four reporters a combined 12 awards ,four 1st place plaques, four 2nd place awards, and four honorable mention certificates , at the June 15 annual awards dinner. All awards were in the non-daily newspapers category.

The Business Journal has won more than 160 editorial awards in the past seven years.

“The reason we are an industry leader in San Diego is because of our editorial staff,” said Ted Owen, president and publisher of the Business Journal.

Managing editor Rick Bell walked off with two 1st place finishes, one for a Sports Story or Series and the other for Opinion or Column.

Tourism and marketing staff writer Tanya Rodrigues took home a 1st place award in the Business/Science/Health category, plus multiple 2nd place awards in the News Story category, as well as Feature Story or Series.

High-tech reporter Andrea Siedsma landed the 1st and 2nd place in the Political/Government/Legal Story category and an honorable mention in the Education category.

Staff writer Mike Allen took 2nd place in Education and received an honorable mention in the Political/Government/Legal Story category.

Assistant editor Julie Gallant was recognized with an honorable mention for Special Sections.

Marion Webb, who covers biotech and health care, earned an honorable mention for her stories in the Business/Science/Health category.

“These 12 awards are just another reason why we are the San Diego award-winning business weekly,” Owen said.
