Building — Barnhart Completes Project For MCAS Miramar

Staff Writer

Douglas E. Barnhart Inc. has completed two large construction projects in the past month, a company official said.

Two hangars at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station were restored and asbestos was removed from the facilities, said Tami Barnhart, a spokeswoman for the company. The two hangars were also retrofitted for earthquake resistance and the roofs were replaced.

The construction company also completed the Desert Willow Golf Course clubhouse in the city of Palm Desert, Barnhart said. The 16,000-square-foot building was a design-build effort by the construction company’s staff, the Dahlin Group of Carlsbad and Impact Interiors of Coto de Caza.

Early this month, Keeton Construction Co. Inc. completed the first phase renovation at Prospect Square, a 28,860-square-foot shopping center at 1025 Prospect St. in La Jolla. The three-story, concrete and steel building, which contains three levels of subterranean parking, was completely remodeled to include a new restaurant with escalators and retail space on the ground level, said Bruce G. Keeton, principal-in-charge.

Meanwhile, T.B. Penick & Sons has been busy on concrete work for an office building and parking garage at Sorrento South Corporate Centre at 9276 and 9330 Scranton Road. The project consists of two six-story metal frame buildings with a total of 283,000 square feet of space. The adjacent parking garage is 82,000 square feet and will accommodate up to 577 vehicles when it is completed, said Tim Penick, president of T.B. Penick & Sons. Swinerton & Walberg Builders is the general contractor and Carrier Johnson is the project architect on the job, Penick said.

Another San Diego-based builder, Bilbro Construction Co., finished five tenant improvement projects in Symphony Towers at 750 B St. last month. More than 23,000 square feet of space was remodeled in the projects, said Kristen Ward, a spokeswoman for the construction company.

Peterbuilt Corp. finished a 40,000-square-foot renovation of the National University building at 4141 Camino del Rio S. this month, said Judy Kreisberg, a company spokeswoman. All three floors of the university were remodeled and new landscaping was installed. Carol Hinton of The Hinton Group of San Diego was the space planner.

Hawkins & Hawkins Architects of San Diego has received building permit approval for the Lofts on 5th, a work-live condominium project in Downtown. The San Diego division of Taylor Ball General Contractors will be the builder for the development near the Gaslamp District, said David Hawkins, a principal in the architectural firm. Construction on the first phase of 24 condos will get started June 1, he added.

Bycor General Contractors Inc. early this month finished a 22,300-square-foot tenant improvement project designed by Hurkes Design Associates for Fish & Richardson, an intellectual property and technology law firm at 4350 La Jolla Village Drive.
