With gas prices soaring and local freeways becoming parking lots, a healthy commute may be the answer.
On May 18, more than 4,000 San Diego residents are expected to leave their cars at home and bike to work.
“Bike to Work Day is a great time to give bicycle commuting a try,” said K.C. Butler, Bike to Work Day 2001 coordinator. “Thousands of cyclists will be out lending moral support, plus over 30 pit stops located throughout the region will supply participants with free Bruegger’s Bagels, Souplantation muffins, fresh fruit from Henry’s Marketplace, and other goodies.”
Bike to Work Day registration is free, and everyone receives a free mini-bicycle tune-up at any Bike USA location; Pit Stops refreshments; plus a chance to win valuable prizes including bicycles, T-shirts and bicycle clothing.
In addition, local transit districts as well as the Coaster are offering free rides during Bike to Work Day to those combining bus, trolley, or Coaster service with their bicycle commute.
“For those whose commute may be too long, combining mass transit with bicycling is a great way to get to and from work,” Butler said.
The goals of Bike to Work Day are:
– To promote cycling as a viable form of transportation to work;
– To decrease traffic congestion;
– To improve air quality;
– To promote safe bicycle commuting.
