The San Diego Better Business Bureau said it has issued an alert about Qchex.com, a Rancho Bernardo-based Internet services company that allows users to print or send checks via e-mail to recipients that can print the checks.
The bureau said it has received about 100 consumer complaints relating to Qchex.com, an affiliate of Neovi Data Corp. of Rancho Bernardo, that some clients of Qchex.com have issued fraudulent checks.
“Online check processing has become a popular way to buy and sell goods, especially for Internet auction shoppers,” the bureau said.
However, fraud can occur because online checks do not always require a signature and some people will create “demand drafts.” Banks can see these checks as valid by simply using checks’ account and bank routing numbers, the bureau stated.
Attempts to reach the company were unsuccessful.
