Melissa Mayer, executive chef at the Guild Restaurant and Lounge in Barrio Logan, is set to make her national TV debut on the “Food Network Challenge” in an episode airing at 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9.
Mayer will compete against four other chefs from around the world for the title of Ultimate Mac’n Cheese Wiz.
Also in the lineup is the reigning “Queen of Mac’n Cheese,” Delilah Winder, a Philadelphia chef.
After a three-week interview process, Mayer was selected to compete on the show from more than 3,000 applicants and entries received, making her the first San Diego chef to compete on the nationally televised cooking show. For the challenge, Mayer and her competitors were asked to make two macaroni and cheese dishes , one traditional and one signature.
From 6-8 p.m. Sept. 10, the Guild plans to host a special viewing party of that episode. Wine and samples of Mayer’s competition cuisine will be available.
