Barnhart Awarded $129M Contract to Upgrade Santee Schools

The Santee School District has awarded San Diego-based contractor Barnhart Inc. a $129 million contract for the improvement of facilities at each of the district’s nine schools. The five-year construction project is planned to begin in March and improvements will include library/technology centers, improved athletic facilities and upgraded heating and air systems. Sprotte+Watson Architecture and Planning of Vista provided design services for the classroom modernizations. The program is funded by Proposition R, a $60 million bond, as well as the state and local matching funds and grants.

McMillin Homes has begun construction on a new phase of homes at its Quintessa neighborhood, located within the community of Rolling Hills Ranch in eastern Chula Vista. Foundations were poured this month on six homes, three of which feature new floor plans ranging from 2,692 to 3,582 square feet. The floor plans feature three to seven bedrooms and 2.5 to five baths. Prices start in the high $700,000s.

Vista general contractor Good & Roberts Inc. has completed construction at the Carlsbad Senior Center, 799 Pine Ave. The project included demolition of the first floor reception area and the creation of a new exercise room, along with refinishing existing office space. Interior Resource provided design services for the project.

Construction is complete on phase four of La Costa Glen Carlsbad, a retirement community at 1940 Levante St. in Carlsbad. With the construction finished, approximately 300 new residents are expected to move into the community by the end of March. The 281-acre retirement community now offers 211 more apartment homes, 52 new villas and a 32,000-square-foot clubhouse. Residents of La Costa Glen will also have access to a 12,000-square-foot recreation and fitness center.

San Diego State University plans to open a 2,800-square-foot art gallery in downtown San Diego within the Electra Tower at 725 W. Broadway. Bosa Development Corp., the builder of the tower, has donated space to SDSU for 60 years. The donation is valued at $2.5 million. The ground floor space will be a student and faculty gallery in addition to hosting art exhibitions. It is uncertain when the gallery will open.

The first phase of tenant improvements for Helicon Therapeutics Inc.’s new corporate office and research facility at 7473 Lusk Blvd. in Sorrento Valley is complete. Helicon, which specializes in neuroscience research, also signed a 10-year lease for the 78,716 square feet of space it will be occupying. DPR Construction is the general contractor for the project.
