August Unemployment at 6.4 Percent

San Diego’s unemployment actually dropped a tenth of a percent in August to 6.4 percent, but that’s because the state Employment Development Department recently revised its original 6.1 percent unemployment figure for July, according to an EDD report released Sept. 19.

The increase on the July number was the result of late responses from area employers, says EDD representative Barbara Ruehl.

San Diego’s unemployment was less than California’s 7.6 percent, but greater than the national rate of 6.1 percent for the same month.

July’s 6.5 percent unemployed in San Diego was the highest since July 1995, when the rate hit 7 percent. In the early 1990s, local unemployment averaged more than 7 percent, and hit the peak in July 1993 at 8.6 percent.

The August gain of a net of 500 jobs was mainly driven by the education sector increasing by 800 jobs due to teachers and others returning to work from the summer recess. Also, leisure and hospitality added 800 jobs during the month.

Regional unemployment has risen from 5.2 percent in January. During the 12 months, the two sectors shedding the most jobs were construction, which contracted by 7,200 jobs, and financial activities, which lost 4,700 jobs.

Meanwhile, 3,400 jobs were added in government, and 3,300 were added in education and health services.
