San Diego had 123 technology startups in the first half of 2008, according to a report released Oct. 13 by Connect.
The number breaks down to 47 businesses in the first quarter and 76 in the second. Companies most often fell into two categories: software and the combined category of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medical.
The Connect-track survey looks at all of California. Only Los Angeles County beat San Diego County in the second quarter, with 159 new businesses. Santa Clara and Orange counties tied for third with 71 startups apiece.
Connect is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating and sustaining the growth of innovative technology and life sciences businesses in San Diego.
