April Hotel Occupancy Rates Up Slightly

There’s little doubt that chilly and drizzly weather during most of the Memorial Day weekend will result in a smaller visitor turnout than the same three-day holiday weekend last year. But April offered a ray of sunshine for local innkeepers.

Occupancy rates at the county’s hotels notched up slightly by 1.2 percent to reach 74.1 percent last month compared with the same year-ago month, according to Smith Travel Research, which keeps tabs on the nation’s lodging industry. The Tennessee-based company released the report in late May.

Average daily room rates rose 7.5 percent to $146.12, while the average amount of revenue derived from the rooms was up 8.7 percent to $108.22.

For the nation as a whole, occupancy was off 0.4 percent, or basically flat, at 63.9 percent. Daily room rates were up 4.6 percent on average to $108.07, while the revenue from rooms was up 4.3 percent to $68.76 on average.
